Music Genre Guide: Alternative

The alternative music genre provides a sense of nostalgia echoing back to the 1970s and 1980s through the combination of pop, folk and rock. There are songs that make you want to dance, but also calming ones which are perfect to relax to; this music can be applied to any mood. The lyrics are often thoughtful and beautiful; poetic phrases which stick in your head, combined with eccentric melodies. You discover something different and independent from the charts, which allows you to have that slightly smug feeling of keeping a magical musical secret. My current favourites are James Vincent McMorrow’s latest album, We Move, and Young the Giant’s latest Home of the Strange.
